I’m outraged that the New York Times published a piece (here and here) under the headline “Latinx Leadership Is Needed,” attacking our communities and calling for our leaders to “rise above racist and sexist rhetoric.” The article was written by a young journalist who has dedicated his career to helping the Latinx community fight racism and gender stereotypes in our nation’s capital. The young writer is a journalist from Puerto Rico who has worked in El Salvador and Honduras. He has experience working with grassroots organizations and grassroots politicians, and a sense of the community through which to speak, but he has yet to learn he must be better than those he is criticizing in order to write a positive article.

Let’s think about this for a second. The New York Times used the term “Latinx” because it has been used by some for so long that it no longer refers to our community, and because it’s a term that is so widely accepted that it is often used without question. The New York Times
