ST. LOUIS — A man who rushed the state Capitol with his father after a gunman opened fire, but then turned the gun on himself, was sentenced to two years in prison Tuesday, the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office said.

The sentence was handed down by Circuit Judge Timothy Wilson.

Tramon Eason Greenlee, 33, of St. Louis, fatally shot State Rep. LaVondria Steele, 49, and the legislative leader of the Missouri House of Representatives, as he approached them on the third floor of the Capitol, the prosecutor’s office said in a news release Tuesday. The gunman shot Steele as a “final warning” through a video released by the state Bureau of Investigation, the office said.

Greenlee died Friday from the bullet fired by law officer Michael Walsh, who was wounded in a gunfight with Greenlee and a security officer after they ran out of the Capitol.

Greenlee had a long criminal history. In 2008, he was arrested on a charge of resisting arrest with violence for allegedly punching, choking and pulling a police officer in the chest. Police said he was booked over the counter, fined $100 and released.

At the time, police said that Greenlee had an argument with his wife, who was at the scene during the arrest. It was later discovered that Greenlee had been drinking. He was charged with driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Greenlee was charged April 6 with driving while intoxicated, driving while having an unlawful blood or breath alcohol level, driving without a license and possession of marijuana.

A judge ordered Greenlee to stop driving for a year, and he completed the year without incident, the newspaper reported.

Greenlee also pleaded guilty to a felony charge of providing a false address to police officers in the city of St. Louis on May 2, 2010, and was sentenced to 30 days of jail, according to the city court clerk. He also pleaded guilty to a felony charge of assault on May 23,
