Nairobi, Kenya – A prominent Pakistani journalist who fled Pakistan to escape a death sentence for blasphemy has been killed by gunmen in a bloody attack on an upscale mall near the country’s capital.

Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui was shot and killed in broad daylight at Nairobi’s Westgate Mall, where crowds of shoppers were just starting their Christmas Day shopping. His two-month-old son was not harmed.

His family fled the country for fear of death for their relatives in a Pakistan where the blasphemy law remains on the books.

His family members in Pakistan were on the phone with him, his bodyguard in Nairobi and his sister in Pakistan, who said he died instantly.

“A man came up to him and shot him from behind,” said Nisha Kumar, 34, who said she saw two men on bikes shoot the journalist at close range, killing him instantly.
