World No. 1 Iga Swiatek wins her third major title at the US Open
Iga Swiatek has won her third US Open championship and the second since becoming a member of the United States team in 2014, following an astonishing run in Montreal as the No. 1 seed. The 36-year-old, who turned pro at 19, is now the oldest tournament winner in US Open history.
Iga Swiatek won her third major title, and she is an all-time major champion.
Swiatek has now won six out of 10 major titles in her career, including a record three women’s major titles, and has never lost a single major final. But the only times she has left the world top 10, she has done so by winning the WTA and ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events, where she has collected a record seven titles at five different tournaments. In fact, she has a career record of 24-2 against the No. 1 ranking in the ATP rankings, a stunning statistic. In the US Open, she has not lost any of her 15 matches against the No. 1s and in the last five months of the season, she has not faced a single top 10 player since she beat her 2013 French Open champion Kim Clijsters in the French Open final.
Swiatek is now a two-time all-time women’s major champion at three different grounds: the US Open, the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
Earlier in the day, No. 1 Ana Ivanovic defeated the defending champion Simona Halep by a score of 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
Ivanovic’s achievement in defeating Halep on Centre Court in the final was the fourth US Open final over the last five years that has been decided on the grass. She has also won the 2015 US Open title on that court, the 2013 and 2014 Wimbledon titles and the 2014 Australian Open title.
All three of her women’s major titles on grass are also the only four in the last 23 years: 2015 US Open, 2013 and 2014 WTA World Tour Masters 1000, and 2014 Australian Open.
Swatek wins her third US Open title and second straight
As expected, Iga Swiatek’s three singles wins on hard courts in the last two years at the US Open came down to the wire.
